My name is Sofiane Sylve. After more than three decades as a professional dancer and now as an Artistic Director at large, I’ve had the privilege of working with companies and professional schools around the world. That perspective has shown me what dancers need most – and how rare it is to find a place that truly gives it to them.

I met Sophie serendipitously while in California. From our first conversation, I was struck by her fierce energy and determination to build a season when most dancers in the U.S. are on layoff. That commitment is extraordinary because in the U.S., most dancers don’t have a full season. Their careers are short and their opportunities to grow are even shorter.

That is why Pointeworks matters. They give dancers time, space, and purpose – a chance to keep creating when the rest of the industry goes quiet.

A Moment I’ll Never Forget

While guest teaching in San Diego, I saw choreographer Reka Gyulai and her dancers working tirelessly to create something new – world-class work with bare-bones resources. I stepped in to count the music, and what I witnessed reminded me why I believe so profoundly in this company: artists pushing forward, building beauty from almost nothing. 

That is why I choose to donate my time – and why I hope you’ll join me in supporting Pointeworks. Together, we can keep dancers working and nurture new voices that might not yet have a platform in larger companies.
