BALLET 101
BALLET 101
A first-timer’s guide to attending the ballet
Ballet is for you.
You don’t need to know the steps or have a story figured out. Come curious, enjoy the music and movement, and notice what speaks to you. There’s no single right way to experience ballet.
01
Come as you are
Dress up if you enjoy making a night of it, or come in jeans or straight from work. There’s no need for a special outfit. Wear something that feels like you.
TIP: Comfort comes first. Bring a light layer if you tend to feel chilly in theaters.
02
Get to know the performance
No preparation is required. If you’re curious, explore the program and meet the artists before you arrive. Your performance program offers more about the ballets, music, and people on stage.
TIP: Visit Backstage for rehearsal glimpses and stories from Pointeworks.
03
Applause is welcome
Feel free to applaud after a ballet or an impressive moment. If you’re unsure when to clap, following the audience is perfectly fine.
TIP: The curtain call, when the artists return for their final bows, is a wonderful moment to show your appreciation.
04
Feel the music
At Pointeworks, music helps shape the ballet from the very beginning. Resident Composer Katie Jenkins creates original scores in collaboration with our choreographers. When musicians perform live, you can experience that conversation between sound and movement in the room.
TIP: Notice how a musical phrase changes the way a movement feels.
06
Be present
Please silence your phone and keep its screen dark while the ballet is underway. Save photography and filming for the bows—photos and videos are welcome then!
TIP: We love seeing who joined us! Snap a photo at the theater or with your program, meet the artists at the stage door after the performance, and share your evening on social media. Tag @pointe_works—we love connecting with our community.
05
Ballet loves company
Bring a friend, plan a date night, or enjoy an evening on your own. Everyone is welcome, whether it’s your first ballet or your fiftieth.
TIP: Compare impressions afterward. You may notice completely different moments, and both experiences are equally valid.
07
Plan your visit
Aim to arrive about 30 minutes before the performance so you have time to settle in. Check your ticket and the event or venue page for entry details, parking, accessibility, running time, and intermissions. Late seating follows the venue’s policy.
TIP: Browse upcoming events for performance details, or contact us with questions about your visit.
08
Enjoy intermission
Intermission is a break between parts of the performance. Ours is 20 minutes—time to take a walk, stretch your legs, browse the merchandise for a souvenir, grab a drink, or read your program.
TIP: Chat with a neighbor about the art: “What moment stayed with you, and how did the music shape what you felt?” Return to your seat before the performance resumes.
