Being a Mom Inside and Outside the Studio
Ballet as a career is extremely hard. Being a mother requires super human strength. These two women do both.
Meet Nicole Von Enck and Maine Chernjavsky: two extraordinary dancers, artists, and mothers.
These two danced in the POINTEWORKS July Residency with choreographer Hélène Simoneau in the creation of our newest ballet Where No Storms Come.
Simoneau was inspired by the idea of embodying that safe space where no harm can come- a sanctuary.
Having two of the female dancers, Nicole and Maine, both be mothers felt especially meaningful, opening the door to explore how their experiences as mothers informed their dancing throughout this residency and beyond.
Below, Nicole and Maine share their reflections on navigating motherhood and dance during our July Residency.
INTERVIEW WITH NICOLE
What did a day-in-a-life look like in the July Residency?
"My days started 5/6am when my kids woke up and I would take them to the park or the beach to have quality time with them and let my husband get a bit of extra sleep. Then the incredible dad that he is would have both kids from 8:15am-6pm. After that I would take over the dinner and bedtime shift. It was a crazy puzzle, but we made it work and we had a lovely family trip as well as me getting to dance with Pointeworks."
How has being a mom informed your dancing and growth as an artist?
"Being a mom has helped me be so much more present and focused when in the studios because when I leave I give 100% of myself to my family. It also has helped me really appreciate the audience’s point of view and how I dance for them now that I have my kids watching too."
What is myth about being a ballerina and a mom that you disagree with and want to prove wrong?
"I think a myth I disagree with in my own personal experiences is that you are doing this alone. I’ve had the honor and privilege of dancing with so many moms and having wonderful professional ballerinas I admire come alongside me and give such great support and advice. And I genuinely try to do the same for all the ballet mamas I work or spend time with."
How has Pointeworks supported you as a dancer and as a mom?
"Pointeworks has been incredibly supportive of moms. I felt welcomed and valued as both a dancer and a mother, and that support made it possible for me to fully participate in the residency while also caring for my family."
What was a favorite moment during the July residency?
"I loved meeting and collaborating with so many talented artists. It was so special to work with Hélène and the dancers in the studio. The live music and original composition by Katie Jenkins were also highlights of the residency."
How has being a mom informed your dancing and growth as an artist?
"Dancing is a privilege and a gift. Becoming a mom has made me more present and intentional, both at home and in the studio. I embrace every moment and appreciate every opportunity to dance."
How do these incredible women do it all?
Intentionality and presence.
Nicole and Maine both shared a similar reflection in their interviews: motherhood has deepened their sense of presence. Whether learning choreography in the studio or caring for their children, they’ve found themselves more attuned to the moment in front of them. To listen, to absorb, and to fully show up.
Their experiences offer a reminder for all of us: pursue your dreams with intention, and be present enough to experience them along the way.
