One-Week Choreographic Residencies
Each year, Pointeworks receives hundreds of inquiries from choreographers seeking time, space, and support to create. While only a small number of new works can be commissioned for our mainstage season, we believe the act of making is just as vital as performance.
The Pointeworks One-Week Choreographic Residency Program provides paid, off-season creative opportunities for one choreographer and 2–3 dancers—offering studio access, artistic freedom, and a supportive environment focused on process rather than product. Residencies conclude with an informal work-in-progress sharing and may be documented for digital access through Pointeworks Watch.
Our Residency Model in Practice
In January, Pointeworks hosted a two-week New York City residency with choreographer Jacquelyn Long, based at Baryshnikov Arts Center and New York City Center.
The first week was dedicated entirely to creation—providing paid dancers, studio access, and creative space for Jacquelyn to develop new work without the pressure of a finished premiere. The second week extended that process outward through community-centered events, including open rehearsals and Choreo & Cocktails, inviting audiences directly into the artistic process.
This structure—equitably paid artists, dedicated rehearsal space, original music, and open access to the creative process—is central to the Pointeworks residency model. Support from individuals and partners makes these residencies possible and helps sustain future programs that prioritize process over product, expand off-season employment, and keep ballet creation accessible year-round.
