Expanding Access to Dance
At Pointeworks, community engagement is not an add-on to our artistic work—it is central to our mission. Throughout each season, we invest in programs that remove financial barriers, connect professional artists with emerging dancers, and invite new audiences into the creative process.
From free professional classes and company repertory weeks to open rehearsals, interdisciplinary partnerships, and community ticket initiatives, Pointeworks is committed to making ballet more accessible both on and off the stage.
In 2026 alone, hundreds of dancers, students, artists, and community members participated in Pointeworks programs offered at no cost or on a pay-what-you-can basis.
Bringing Professional Ballet Into the Studio
In July 2026, Pointeworks proudly donated two full weeks of Company Repertory programming to young dancers in Southern California, giving students the rare opportunity to learn authentic professional company repertoire directly from the artists who created and perform it.
Unlike a traditional summer intensive, these residencies immersed students in the creative process behind a professional ballet company—working alongside internationally acclaimed dancers, learning original choreography, and experiencing how new ballets are developed.
Most importantly, Pointeworks donated 100% of our artists' time and expertise. Our dancers, faculty, and creative team volunteered their services, and Pointeworks covered all artist costs out of our own operating budget as part of our commitment to community engagement and arts education.
While Westside Ballet managed student registration for its own program, no tuition or program fees were paid to Pointeworks. This initiative was created solely to expand access, build new relationships within the dance community, and share the work of our company with the next generation of artists.

Throughout the residency, students worked alongside artists performing with major ballet companies across North America.

In addition to repertory, students participated in professional-level ballet classes, conditioning sessions, rehearsals, and discussions about careers in dance, helping bridge the gap between student training and professional company life.
Professional Company Repertoire
Students learned excerpts from works currently performed by Pointeworks, rehearsed exactly as company dancers approach professional productions.
Chasing Shadows
Choreography: Laine Habony
Led by Nicole Von Enck, original cast member and rehearsal stager, students learned repertory directly from the artist who originated the role.
Transcendence
Choreography: Réka Gyulai
Taught by original cast member Rayleigh Vendt, giving dancers firsthand insight into the choreographer's movement language and artistic intent.

PROFESSIONAL COMPANY CLASSES
Supporting Artists in the Off-Season
Professional ballet dancers often lose access to affordable training outside of their company contracts. Pointeworks helps fill that gap by offering company classes that are free or pay-what-you-can for professional and pre-professional dancers.
Our recommended contribution is just $10 per class, with artists always welcome to attend at no cost—significantly below the typical $30+ professional drop-in rate.
These classes create a welcoming environment where artists from many companies can continue training, connect with fellow professionals, and remain performance-ready during the off-season.

OPEN REHEARSALS
Inviting the Community Into the Creative Process
Rather than only presenting finished performances, Pointeworks regularly opens the rehearsal studio to the public.
These informal events allow audiences to observe new ballets being created, ask questions of artists, and experience choreography at every stage of development.
All rehearsals are offered on a pay-what-you-can basis to ensure accessibility.
MOVEMENT IN BLOOM
Ballet Meets Visual Art
On July 25, 2026, Pointeworks partnered with Ethan Blu Gallery to present Movement in Bloom, a free community event combining contemporary visual art with live ballet.
Guests experienced the first public showing of excerpts from Hélène Simoneau's new ballet Where No Storm Comes while exploring the gallery's exhibition, creating an accessible introduction to the creative process outside of a traditional theatre.

Pointeworks believes artistic careers extend beyond the stage. Throughout 2026 we partnered with organizations that expanded educational opportunities for both dancers and students.
Second Act NYC
Professional development, leadership programming, financial literacy, and career transition mentorship for Pointeworks artists.
New York Film Academy
Film students documented rehearsals and performances while receiving hands-on experience producing dance films. Pointeworks artists also mentored students through the filmmaking process alongside Director of Media Alexander Sargent, creating a collaborative learning experience for both disciplines.

Making Live Performance Accessible
Pointeworks believes cost should never prevent someone from experiencing live dance.
For our October 2026 production of COMPOSITIONS, the company committed to distributing 700 complimentary tickets throughout the San Diego community.
