Why pointeworks Matters
For the audience
-
World-Class Ballet, Created in San Diego
Pointeworks isn’t just a summer dance company — it’s a bold, artist-led initiative bringing exceptional ballet experiences to San Diego audiences through original work, nationally acclaimed dancers, and a process that invites the community into the heart of creation.
-
Bridging a Cultural Gap in San Diego
While cities like New York and San Francisco enjoy a steady presence of top-tier ballet, San Diego audiences have fewer opportunities to experience high-caliber performances and new work. Pointeworks fills that gap.
Each summer, we bring together:
National-level dancers from companies like New York City Ballet, Texas Ballet Theater, Dance Theater of Harlem, and Royal New Zealand Ballet
Female-identifying choreographers and composers leading the creation of new work
World premieres crafted and staged right here in San Diego
These aren’t touring shows. This is original ballet — created in your city, for your city.
-
This Isn’t Ballet Imported From a Tour
This is world-class work — built in San Diego from the ground up.
Our dancers and choreographers don’t just arrive to perform — they spend weeks rehearsing, experimenting, and collaborating locally to bring new creations to life.
And we invite you in.
Through:
Open rehearsals, Behind-the-scenes content, Artist Q&As, and post-show talkbacks
San Diego audiences get a rare chance to:
Witness how professional ballet is made
Meet the artists behind the work
Engage with the process, not just the product
We believe that art is stronger when it’s shared — and Pointeworks performances are just the final chapter of a much bigger story.
-
Audience Engagement & Community Impact in 2025
In June 2026, Pointeworks deepened its presence in Southern California with two powerful performances:
Over 400 attendees joined us at The Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center in La Jolla
Our Irvine performance welcomed more than 500 guests, including 167 complimentary tickets distributed to students, veterans, and first responders as part of our ongoing commitment to accessibility
In addition to performances, our Open Rehearsal Series drew over 100 audience members, offering a behind-the-scenes look into the creative process and building deeper appreciation for the work being created.
These events reinforced Pointeworks’ role as a vital cultural presence in the region, committed to access, education, and audience connection.
-
Why It Matters
We’re here to elevate the dance experience in San Diego — to give audiences a meaningful, intimate connection to nationally recognized artists and entirely new creations.
Pointeworks isn’t replicating what already exists — we’re building a cultural home for ballet that reflects the talent and potential of this region.
