Robbie Bio | Cello

Robbie Bui is usually recognized as a contemporary cellist, but is a scattered mess of other things. He is a frequent new music collaborator, a composer, a full-time nonprofit arts administrator, collaborative pianist, pop violinist, and even a once-upon-a-time mediocre piccolo player. In October 2026, he joins Pointeworks as a featured musician for Compositions: An Evening of Katie Jenkins, performing as part of Katie Jenkins' newest ballet score at the Balboa Theatre.

He graduated with a Bachelor of Music in Composition from New England Conservatory as a Presser Scholar. He later grew more curious to explore interpretation, culminating in a Master of Arts and a Doctor of Musical Arts in contemporary performance practice at UC San Diego. Through this mixed background, he invests consideration of music's theoretical construction into his performance expressivity, leading to dozens of new works dedicated to him as both a soloist and chamber musician.

Beyond music, he is a professional freelance photographer specializing in creative portraiture and performance documentation. Outside of work, he enjoys learning languages, tailoring thrifted clothes, cutting hair, and making great latte art.
